LANSING, Mich. — Senate Appropriations Minority Vice Chair Jon Bumstead, R-North Muskegon, released the following statement after state fiscal and economic leaders made their economic and state tax revenue projections — anticipating a $1.1 billion surplus in the general fund over the next two years — during Friday’s annual January Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference:
“As we look forward to a projected general fund surplus for the state, we must remain mindful of the realities being faced by families and seniors across Michigan who continue to struggle against higher costs of living. The Legislature now has a tangible opportunity before it — with split power between the House and Senate — to invest in our common priorities, including roads and infrastructure, education, public safety and providing taxpayers with meaningful relief from rising costs. While we will continue to monitor our state’s financial health in the months ahead, I remain hopeful that we will work together to rein in spending and do what’s right for the people of Michigan.”
