Bumstead urges fiscal responsibility despite improved revenue projections

LANSING, Mich.Senate Appropriations Minority Vice Chair Jon Bumstead, R-Norton Shores, released the following statement after state fiscal and economic leaders made their economic and state tax revenue projections during Friday’s May Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference:

“As we continue working on the budget, we need to be conscious of the weak revenue projections expected over the next few years due to less sales tax revenue and growth being on the slower side.

“While the latest revenue estimating conference shows a better forecast than what we had in January, that doesn’t mean the Legislature can go on another spending spree. People are spending less and adjusting their family budgets, and we need to tighten our belts at the state level as well.

“We simply cannot maintain the spending levels we’ve seen in recent budgets. Fiscal responsibility and focusing on items that benefit all Michiganders, like roads and education, must remain a priority as we come together to finalize the upcoming fiscal year budget.”
