LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Jon Bumstead on Tuesday supported an effort that would improve residential living and the business climate in Muskegon Heights.
The $3 million effort would focus on improvements along Sherman Boulevard, which is a main corridor to multiple area businesses and attractions.
“Sherman Boulevard provides direct access to area amenities and is a heavy-use corridor. These improvements will certainly make the area safer and more efficient,” said Bumstead, R-Newaygo. “I join the Muskegon Heights community in welcoming these upgrades.”
The funds were requested to fix sidewalks, improve lighting, add bus station shelters and convert blighted, abandoned properties into useful properties or replace them with green spaces. The plan also seeks to address drainage and sewer issues.
Funding for the project originated during the last legislative session but was held up due to an error in the bill language. The supplemental bill that was passed on Tuesday cleans up the discrepancy and allows the funding to be released to Muskegon Heights so the city can begin work on the cleanup project.
“Getting this language finalized and approved was a priority for me,” Bumstead said. “This project has been delayed as it is, and I am happy to see this moving through the process so Muskegon Heights can break ground on this important community project.”
