Bumstead, Meerman issue statement calling on governor to rescind permanent rules request

LANSING, Mich. —State Sen. Jon Bumstead, R-Newaygo, and Rep. Luke Meerman, R-Coopersville, on Friday issued the following statement in response to Gov. Whitmer’s new mask order set to go into effect Saturday morning:

“While we are happy to see the governor’s announcement today that the state of Michigan is updating its mask and gathering orders to align with the new CDC guidelines, it brings up more questions than answers. The governor and MIOSHA are still requesting that there be permanent COVID-19 work rules.

“Continuing with the promulgation of permanent rules, which include mask mandates, is not in line with science and data, and it appears to not be in line with the governor’s new mask guidance. It just doesn’t make sense.

“We’re calling on the governor and her department to rescind the proposal for the permanent workplace rules in light of her new mask order.”
