Bumstead recognized by American Legion for support of veterans

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Jon Bumstead was presented with an award by the American Legion Department of Michigan on Tuesday in recognition of his care and support of Michigan’s military veterans.

“The men and women who served in our Armed Forces were willing to put their lives on the line for all of us and the least we can do is to help take care of them when they leave the service,” said Bumstead, R-North Muskegon. “It is truly an honor to serve those who served us, and I am grateful for the American Legion’s recognition of my efforts to support our heroes.”

Specifically, Bumstead was recognized for his work on Senate Bills 783 and 784, and 1084 — legislation he introduced to ensure 100% disabled military veterans and the spouses of those killed in action continue to receive a 100% property tax exemption through the current process and would also set a $2,000 property tax cap for veterans who are more than 50% disabled but less than 100% disabled. It would also shift the tax burden from local governments by requiring the state to reimburse them for the property tax exemptions. This would help relieve local municipalities from some of the financial stresses.

Bumstead was presented the award in his Lansing office by Tim Poxson, who serves as the legislative chair of the American Legion Department of Michigan.
