Sen. Bumstead: Right to Work repeal, prevailing wage ‘returns us to the failed policies of the past’

LANSING, Mich. — Senate Appropriations Minority Vice Chair Jon Bumstead, R-North Muskegon, on Tuesday released the following statement after the Senate passed partisan legislation to repeal Right to Work and restore prevailing wage laws:

“Right to Work gave our labor force more freedom and helped Michigan become more competitive in attracting jobs and growing small businesses over the past decade. It helped us leave the Lost Decade in the rearview mirror by promoting job creation, increasing the state’s median household income and growing employee benefit packages. Its repeal will benefit few and return us to the failed policies of the past.

“The state has a duty to spend its taxpayers’ money responsibly and wisely. Prevailing wage laws inflate the cost of government construction projects by undermining fair competition. Studies have shown this practice costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars more each year. It is fiscally irresponsible for the government to play favorites when it comes to spending tax dollars.”
